Traditionally, device management has been limited to managing devices based on developer-friendly operating systems, such as Windows, Android, iOS and Linux. If OS vendors publish a large and powerful set of APIs, it is possible to write apps that can help manage “smart” devices and endpoints such as smartphones, tablets, and PCs.
On the other hand, there are various types of embedded devices, sensors and equipment running on very rudimentary hardware that is not capable of running apps built using general purpose programming languages. These devices perform very specific functions with limited connectivity with the host machine over USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi.
42Gears has developed a framework that allows you to manage these “not so smart” endpoints by introducing “smart” logic at the host machine level, which performs the role of a proxy for these endpoints.
For example, a printer connected to a network can be enumerated and enrolled into the 42Gears UEM Web Console, where it shows up just like any other “smart” device. An administrator can then remotely monitor and manage the printer from a single console.

A Logical Representation
A “Things Connector” is a software module that logically connects a Thing or an IoT endpoint with SureMDM Nix Agent running on the host machine. The Things Connector can be developed by the vendor of the Thing device or by any developer who has the technical knowledge to communicate with the Thing device over the common transport mechanism such as USB, BT, WiFi etc.
