Case Study - Logistics and Transportation

Business Overview

Gore Nitrogen helps pipeline and oil well managers in the American Midwest extract oil safely and efficiently.

In addition to nitrogen, Gore Nitrogen provides equipment and services for hydraulic fracturing (more commonly known as “fracking”) with an emphasis on clean and inexpensive techniques.

Background and Challenges

Since its inception in 2001, the company had its truck drivers maintain paper logs listing their work hours in order to comply with federal regulations.

In 2016, federal laws changed, forcing trucking companies to shift from paper logs to electronic logging devices (ELDs).

Industry : Transportation

Location : Throughout the American Midwest (Based in Selling, Oklahoma)

Products : SureMDM and SureLock

Challenges : Gore Nitrogen needed to move its drivers from logging hours via paper to logging hours via tablet without getting distracted on the road.

Solution : SureMDM and SureLock let Gore Nitrogen keep its drive safe and on-task while implementing the new tablets.

As Gore Nitrogen looked for the best way to manage ELDs, the company focused on a few specific concerns:

  1. If non-essential apps distracted drivers, it could pose a major safety hazard on the road, or result in huge data-consumption bills.
  2. If ELDs broke while on the road, in-person repairs from the IT team would be impossible.
  3. If ELDs had outdated software, it could result in drivers failing to properly coordinate with each other on the road.
  4. If drivers were to lose these devices, the company needed to find them and reclaim them.
  5. If corporate IT admins needed to make immediate updates to device settings, they could not make those changes in-person.

The Solution

SureMDM and SureLock by 42Gears

Gore Nitrogen chose 42Gears to help them because 42Gears solutions provided exactly what they needed in a single streamlined package.

The company especially appreciated that 42Gears products were easy-to-understand, came with ample resources and support when they needed additional help, and took less than a minute per device to set up.

42Gears helped Gore Nitrogen implement SureMDM (the 42Gears’ device management solution) and SureLock (the 42Gears device lockdown solution), which integrated with each other to resolve each of Gore Nitrogen’s concerns with their ELDs.

  1. Using SureLock, Gore Nitrogen could restrict ELDs to display only the app (or apps) necessary for logging hours, and adjust the layout to accommodate for fewer apps.
  2. SureMDM allowed IT admins to remotely troubleshoot ELDs- viewing screens in real-time and even controlling devices remotely.
  3. Using SureMDM, Gore Nitrogen could deploy apps and app updates remotely from a central console.
  4. IT admins could monitor device location at any time. SureMDM could lock down or wipe lost devices to maximize the odds they were kept safe until reclaimed.
  5. Any time the organization needed to push apps and settings, it simply needed to make modifications on a tablet in its office, and the same changes would automatically take place on all driver ELDs the next time they were connected to the Internet.

  1. Drivers have remained focused on the road since implementing ELDs, and Gore Nitrogen has kept its data costs under control.
  2. Remote repairs have enabled drivers’ ELDs to consistently function as needed, ensuring that drivers have logged their hours in accordance with federal regulations.
  3. The apps on every ELD are always up-to-date without the need for driver intervention, keeping drivers safe and connected on the road.
  4. IT admins have a clear plan of action in the event that tablets go missing- using SureMDM to quickly make sure sensitive data cannot be stolen or otherwise misused.
  5. Every ELD has the same settings configurations so no driver can tamper with devices to alter ELD functionality, intentionally or otherwise.

“42Gears has by far been the best I’ve ever worked with. They always understand the problem, don’t try to place blame, and always have a solution. The dashboard view of SureMDM complete with battery percentage, version numbers, signal percentage, etc. is my favorite."
