For most IT and system administrators, the workday rarely ends when the clock says it should.
There is always another device to troubleshoot, another update to deploy, another ticket waiting in the queue, or another user who “just needs five minutes.”
The reality is that IT professionals spend so much of their time solving everyone else’s problems that they rarely get the opportunity to pause, learn from peers, or simply enjoy being part of a community that understands what the job is really like.
That is exactly why we created CommuneIT.
We recently wrapped up the first edition of the CommuneIT event, bringing together IT professionals for a day of learning, networking, and fun. This blog highlights some of the memorable moments, insightful conversations, and key takeaways from the event.
CommuneIT is not another tech conference, but a community where IT professionals could step away from the daily hustle, connect with people who speak the same language, exchange experiences, and have a little fun along the way.
More than an event, IT was a much-needed reset
From the moment attendees walked in, the goal was to create an environment where conversations came before presentations.
Instead of sitting through product demos or technical sessions, participants teamed up for an IT Escape Room Challenge that tested their problem-solving skills in a completely different way. Watching experienced IT professionals collaborate, debate clues, and celebrate every solved puzzle reminded everyone why they enjoy solving problems in the first place.
The energy continued with a lively game of IT-themed Pictionary, where familiar technologies, acronyms, and everyday IT concepts became surprisingly entertaining. It didn’t matter whether someone managed hundreds of endpoints or spent their days supporting users—everyone had something to contribute, and plenty of laughs followed.
It was refreshing to see professionals who usually spend their days behind screens enjoying face-to-face interactions.
A journey through decades of IT
One of the highlights of the meetup was an engaging session by Pavan, an IT expert with decades of industry experience.
Rather than focusing solely on today’s technologies, he took everyone on a journey through the evolution of enterprise IT.
The audience revisited the days of:
- Floppy disks
- Sun Solaris systems
- Early enterprise computing
- Client-server environments
- Virtualization
- Cloud computing
- And finally, the rapid rise of AI
The session wasn’t just about nostalgia, it gave us all a different perspective with respect to technological advancements.
Every generation of IT has brought disruptive technologies that initially seemed overwhelming. Yet IT professionals adapted, learned, and became the people organizations relied upon.
AI is simply the next chapter. Pavan demonstrated practical ways system administrators can embrace AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve productivity, accelerate troubleshooting, and free up time for more strategic work.
Instead of viewing AI as something to fear, attendees explored how it can become another tool in the modern IT toolkit.
The conversations everyone could relate to
Some of the most memorable moments happened outside the formal sessions.Conversations naturally drifted between topics that every IT professional has an opinion on.
- Which operating system do you enjoy working with the most?
- What’s your worst IT nightmare?
- What has changed the most in endpoint management over the years?
And perhaps the most important conversation of the day…
- How do you switch off after work?
Being a system administrator often means carrying work mentally long after leaving the office. Production issues don’t wait for business hours, security incidents don’t follow calendars, and unexpected calls can happen at any time.
Several participants shared how important it is to consciously “shut the work brain off” once they’re home.
Whether it’s spending time with family, pursuing hobbies, exercising, or simply avoiding work notifications for a while, everyone agreed that protecting personal wellbeing is just as important as protecting company infrastructure.
Building a community
One takeaway stood out above everything else.
IT professionals genuinely value having a space where they can talk openly with peers who understand their challenges. All the participants looked for real conversations, shared experiences, and practical tips for managing both work and life. That is the spirit we want CommuneIT to represent.
