Today is Data Privacy Day<\/strong>!

As we say every year, Data Privacy Day is to raise awareness among individuals and organizations to promote the best practices of data protection. This day is marked as a reminder to users, individuals, and organizations to understand the importance of data protection and create awareness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensuring data privacy is an important first step towards a governance-minded approach to organizational data. Movements like this flare the conversation of cyber security concerns, data breaches, cyberattacks, and that act as catalysts for the need and demand for more actions to be taken in order to protect data.

It’s a day when you may start making changes in your digital life for your own and everyone else\u2019s security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRIVACY EVOLUTION<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


It was in the 1970s that Privacy Principles started to get developed and articulated. The US developed Fair Information Privacy principles (FIPS) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) came out with its list of privacy principles in the early 1980s. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) followed the same in the early 2000s.

These Privacy Principles have formed the basis of laws and regulations for Privacy and Data protection worldwide.

The biggest revolution in data protection laws came into force with General Data Protection Regulations. The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into being as a result of soaring data breaches and other scandals in the virtual world.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting inspired by the European Union, other states like California, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, Thailand, Brazil have their own versions of Data protection laws now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY DATA PRIVACY IS MORE CRITICAL NOWADAYS?<\/strong>
<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, we have seen the implementation of some stringent privacy legislations such as the European Union\u2019s GDPR, California\u2019s CCPA, Brazil\u2019s LGPD, and others.
With the advent of recent CPRA regulation as well as discussions on prospective federal privacy law in the USA, data protection has become an imperative for one and all.

The world has seen numerous headlines about data breaches that have impacted millions of people at one go.

2021 has been a record-breaking year for data breaches. According to Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) research, the total number of data breaches through September 30, 2021, has already exceeded the total number of events in 2020 by 17%, with 1,291 breaches in 2021 compared to 1,108 breaches in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Organizations that state their reliability and trustworthiness whilst handling customer data need to actually exhibit it as the customers quickly fall out of trust with companies that suffer frequent data breaches.

Considering the cost and trust involved in data breaches, it is the need of the hour to initiate steps to secure business data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are  five (5) simple steps you can take this month to be privacy-aware and improve your security plan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Choose Proper Passwords<\/strong>: While setting a password, make sure you choose something that is strong and unusual. Usually, people tend to set up their passwords carelessly and use the same passwords for all accounts. This paves the way for hackers to break into their accounts and commit data theft.     1. Review your Privacy Settings<\/strong>: Update the privacy settings of websites and applications you use the most.  Cross-check whether your account is marked as private or made public. Also, see if your data has been shared with third parties.<\/em>

    2. Implement a \u201cneed to know\u201d Policy: <\/strong> To minimize the risk of data breaches, create policies that limit access to confidential data sets.
